DENVER – June 29, 2026 – The next iteration of Denver International Airport’s (DEN) rotating sculpture program features Colorado-based artist Terry Maker’s large-scale Cowgirl Hat Ball—a 10-foot sphere constructed from more than 500 straw hats—and Cowgirl Hat – 2, a companion piece made from 175 miniature hats. Together, the works reimagine Western art by inverting traditional masculine hierarchies, elevating the hats’ feminine oval form while turning the masculine crown inward. Both sculptures are currently on display on Concourse B, near gate B62, through January 2027.
Maker is a contemporary sculptor and painter whose work explores themes of cosmic creation and universal making through mixed media and found materials. Her labor-intensive practice transforms discarded materials into sculptural works that examine spirituality, redemption and the divine through what she calls “archaeological excavations” of compacted detritus. Maker has exhibited nationally and internationally and especially enjoys having her work connect with audiences throughout the American Southwest.
The rotating sculpture program is a public art incubator for artists in varying stages of their career to gain experience with the complexities of installing and displaying art in an airport environment. The sculptures are meant to create a sense of place, elevate the customer experience and create a memorable impression for travelers and staff. Rotating sculptures are biannually selected through a competitive selection process for six-month rotations.
The next application cycle for DEN’s Rotating Sculpture Program will take place in Fall 2026.
