About 75 Years of the Aspen Music Festival and School

For more than 75 years, the Aspen Music Festival and School has been a beacon for the world’s greatest classical musicians — bringing them together each summer in Aspen, Colorado, to perform, learn, create, and recharge.

Founded in 1949, when Aspen was still a quiet former mining town, the Festival began as a onetime celebration of art and ideas — offered as a gesture of healing in the wake of World War II. That inaugural event drew renowned writers, philosophers, and musicians, in a magical combination of music, intellectual exchange, and breathtaking mountain scenery. Audiences were captivated. They wanted more.

The following summer, the musicians returned — this time with their students. And from that moment, the Festival not only endured but flourished, growing into one of the world’s most revered summer training programs for young classical artists.

Today, the Aspen Music Festival and School stands as one of America’s premier cultural destinations, where the next generation of talent trains alongside today’s classical superstars. The summer season features more than 250 events—master classes, panels, lectures, recitals, open rehearsals, and, of course, breathtaking orchestral performances in the Music Tent. Many of the stars who grace the Aspen stage once studied here themselves; some of Aspen’s starry alumni include Joshua Bell, Gil Shaham, Leonard Slatkin, and Renée Fleming.

During the Festival, Aspen becomes more than a scenic retreat—it becomes a vibrant hub where music, artistry, and inspiration converge. Each summer, the season’s programmatic theme is encapsulated in a piece of art that is used as the cover of the summer program book. This exhibit showcases a selection of program book covers representative of the last 75 years of Aspen Music Festival and School history.
