“The Magic of Glass” Shines at Denver International Airport

Home

DENVER – April 11, 2014 – The Art and Culture Program at Denver International Airport (DIA) presents its newest temporary art exhibition, The Magic of Glass. The exhibition opens April 24 and will be on display through August in Ansbacher Hall, the main walkway which connects Jeppesen Terminal to Concourse A. The Magic of Glass includes more than 60 glass objects and also educates airport visitors about various glassmaking techniques and processes.

The exhibit is a display of fine contemporary glass art by 31 local, national and international artists who were selected based on their expertise and experience working with the medium. Their distinctive styles and diverse talents illustrate the various aesthetic possibilities of this art form and the vast number of techniques used to create these extraordinary works of art. This exhibition was curated in partnership with PISMO Fine Art Glass in Denver.

“We believe airport visitors will take special interest in this exhibition because of its beauty, and this exhibit will coincide with the Denver Botanic Garden’s outdoor exhibition of Dale Chihuly’s glass sculpture, opening in June,” said Chris Stevens, manager of DIA’s Art and Culture Program. “Their exhibit promises to bring many glass art enthusiasts through the doors of the airport because it will be the first outdoor installation by the renowned artist in the Rocky Mountain Region. The Magic of Glass display at DIA is meant to enhance the awareness of this art form for art enthusiasts and casual observers alike.”

About DIA’s Art and Culture Program

DIA’s Art and Culture Program administers the City and County of Denver’s “one percent for art” ordinance which enhances public places and features nearly 30 site-specific works including sculptures, murals and other installations. The pieces are displayed in outdoor landscapes, inside Jeppesen Terminal and on airport concourses, as well as in the train tunnels and on the train itself. In addition to its permanent art collection, DIA curates temporary exhibitions, collaborating with museums, cultural institutions and arts organizations to present the highest quality two- and three-dimensional work. DIA has been named “Best U.S. Airport for Art” in USA Today’s “10Best Reader’s Choice” travel contest in 2013. The category focuses on how airports have been transforming from utilitarian hubs of transport to spaces with beautiful works of art, great restaurants, comfy lounges and terrific shopping. DIA was selected by readers as the favorite among 20 airports nominated by the publication.
