Group Joins Thousands of Other Dancers for Performance on Shimmy Mob Day

DENVER – May 8, 2014 – More than 60 local dancers will delight passengers at Denver International Airport’s Jeppesen Terminal with several free Shimmy Mob performances on Saturday, May 10 from 2 p.m. until approximately 3:30 p.m. The show is part of Shimmy Mob Day where more than 2,300 dancers in 162 cities and seven countries worldwide will dance the same dance on the same day, but the event has a serious meaning behind it. Shimmy Mob Day aims to bring awareness and funds to domestic violence shelters, such as SafeHouse Denver, which provides victims of domestic violence with shelter and support as they reclaim their rights to a life free from domestic violence.

“From Irish dancers to Japanese Shakuhachi players, passengers traveling through Denver International Airport have come to expect the unexpected when it comes to our art performances,” said DIA’s Manager of Arts and Culture Chris Stevens. “We enjoy surprising our passengers with unique art and entertainment programs and while this show will be a fun event, we hope passengers will also take note of the group’s charitable campaign for SafeHouse Denver.”

Shimmy Mob represents all styles of belly dance and will treat audiences at the free event at DIA with a short show full of fun and variety.

About DIA’s Art and Culture Program

DIA’s Art and Culture Program administers the City and County of Denver’s “one percent for art” ordinance which enhances public places and features nearly 30 site-specific works including sculptures, murals and other installations. The pieces are displayed in outdoor landscapes, inside Jeppesen Terminal and on airport concourses, as well as in the train tunnels and on the train itself. In addition to its permanent art collection, DIA curates temporary exhibitions, collaborating with museums, cultural institutions and arts organizations to present the highest quality two- and three-dimensional work. For more information, visit www.flydenver.com/art.

DIA has been named “Best U.S. Airport for Art” in USA Today’s “10Best Reader’s Choice” travel contest in 2013. The category focuses on how airports have been transforming from utilitarian hubs of transport to spaces with beautiful works of art, great restaurants, comfy lounges and terrific shopping. DIA was selected by readers as the favorite among 20 airports nominated by the publication.
