DENVER — May 22, 2014 — Due to inclement weather conditions this week, the scheduled opening of the inbound Peña Boulevard exit to Tower Road has been pushed until 5 p.m. on Friday, May 23. Crews closed the exit ramp to Tower Road from inbound Peña Boulevard at 4 a.m. on Monday, May 19. They originally planned to reopen the ramp by 5 a.m. on Friday, May 23, but inclement weather has forced crews to delay the opening until 5 p.m. on Friday, still allowing access over the Memorial Day weekend.
The work is part of a project to reconstruct a highly traveled section of Peña Boulevard between Second Creek (just west of Tower Road) and E-470. Deterioration of the concrete along the nearly one-mile section of Peña Boulevard has progressed to the point that routine maintenance is no long effective and the stretch of roadway must be rebuilt. DIA will maintain four lanes of traffic, two in each direction, throughout the project.
During the ramp closure, crews are constructing a temporary alignment for inbound Peña Boulevard. On Tuesday, May 27 at 7 p.m. crews will once again close the ramp in order to switch inbound Peña Boulevard traffic onto the alternate alignment. When the ramp reopens at approximately 5 a.m. on Thursday, May 29, inbound Peña Boulevard traffic will be moved onto the new temporary alignment where it will remain until the project is complete. This will allow workers to reconstruct one side of Peña Boulevard while traffic utilizes the other side of the roadway.
All work remains weather dependent and additional changes could occur in the event of more inclement weather.
This $9.6 million reconstruction project is expected to be complete by mid-November 2014, prior to the busy Thanksgiving holiday.
During construction, the speed limit on Peña Boulevard will be reduced to 45 miles per hour. Drivers heading to DIA are strongly encouraged to allow extra time to reach the airport.
Attached is a map showing the project area and construction phasing.
