Overall November passenger traffic down from 2012

DENVER — Jan. 7, 2014 — November passenger traffic at Denver International Airport (DIA) decreased by 3.5 percent compared to the same time last year, as international traffic continued to show year-over-year growth due to service additions over this period.

A total of 4,033,321 passengers traveled through DIA in November 2013, compared to 4,179,802 in November 2012. Year-to-date, passenger traffic is down 1.7 percent, from 48,847,518 passengers in 2012 to 48,040,044 passengers in 2013.

International passenger traffic continued its double-digit growth in November, with a 17 percent increase in international arrivals and departures. Service additions, such as nonstop flights from Denver to Tokyo, and Fort McMurray, Canada, have supported international traffic growth.

“November traffic continued the trend we have seen over the last few months of lower passenger traffic, largely due to capacity reductions implemented by the airlines this year,” said Denver’s Manager of Aviation Kim Day. “The late Thanksgiving and short holiday season may have also been a factor. December felt very busy, but still we expect to finish the year slightly below last year’s record-breaking traffic volume. Growth in international traffic was clearly the highlight of 2013 for us.”

Additionally, mail, freight and express cargo operations saw a 10.9 percent decrease in November over the previous year. To date, 452,993,937 pounds of cargo have been handled at DIA in 2013, down from 475,111,094 pounds of cargo handled during the same time in 2012.
