DENVER – July 24, 2023 – Denver International Airport (DEN) is now showcasing “From War to Words,” an exhibit featuring artwork, portraits and song lyrics created by CreatiVets, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to empower wounded veterans and heal through the arts and music. The two-part exhibit can be found on Concourse A.
“As a 24-year veteran of the United States Army, I believe it is imperative to help and support the men and women who have fought, defended and served our country,” said DEN CEO Phill Washington. “It is an honor and a privilege to see works of art and music from veterans showcased at our airport.”
Veteran artwork, such as collages and mixed media sculptures, is on display in the center of Concourse A on the second-floor mezzanine level. CreatiVets partnered with various universities and art schools throughout the nation to host visual arts programs at no cost to veterans while giving them full access to studio space and the opportunity to create and discuss their art with some of the best instructors in the country. Through this visual arts program, veterans learn the benefits of sharing their stories through art and help relieve some of the challenges they face – and DEN passengers get to enjoy their creativity.
Portraits of the veterans along with the songs can be found across the A-Bridge on the Y-Juncture, just before arriving on the Concourse A second-floor mezzanine. The CreatiVets songwriting program pairs veterans with accomplished songwriters and music artists, giving them the opportunity to creatively express their stories through song and words. The songs featured in the exhibit at DEN are all available to listen to while viewing the exhibition through QR codes located on each veteran portrait and lyric poster.
Veteran portraits in the “From War to Words” were taken by Jason Myers. Song lyrics created by veterans were produced and recorded in collaboration with various performing artists including Aaron Lewis, Vince Gill, Kenny Foster, Love and Theft and more.
“From War to Words” can be enjoyed through mid-January. DEN is the first to include artwork from CreatiVets visual arts programs in an exhibition at an airport.
