2012 Totals Set New Records for Busiest December and the Busiest Holiday Travel Season

DENVER, CO — January 24, 2013 — Denver International Airport’s (DIA) passenger traffic continued to grow in 2012, making it the busiest year in the airport’s history. A total of 4,308,760 passengers traveled through DIA in December 2012, bringing this year’s passenger traffic total to 53,156,278. The record-breaking year is a 0.6 percent increase over the previous record in 2011 of 52,849,132 passengers traveling through DIA. It is the fifth consecutive year that more than 50 million passengers have traveled through DIA annually.

DIA also experienced its busiest holiday travel season in 2012. Passenger traffic in December 2012 surpassed December 2011 traffic, 4,296,496, by 0.3 percent, making it the busiest December in airport history. The busiest November on record was also in 2012 with 4,179,802 passengers traveling through DIA.

“It’s extremely rewarding to finish 2012 with record-breaking numbers and five consecutive months of increased passenger traffic,” said Kim Day, Manager of Aviation. “These numbers reaffirm that Denver remains a very strong market for air travel. We have continued to serve the growing demand for both international and domestic travel introducing new carriers such as Icelandair, Spirit Airlines and Volaris in 2012. I am looking forward to United’s service to Narita, Japan in 2013, which will bring business and leisure opportunities to and from Denver.”

December had a 1.6 percent decrease in operations, from 51,781 in 2011, to 50,940 in 2012. Cargo saw a decrease of 7.5 percent with 46.7 million pounds of total cargo handled in December 2012, compared to 50.5 million pounds during the same month last year.
