DENVER, CO — Nov. 4, 2013 — September passenger traffic at Denver International Airport (DIA) was essentially flat in 2013 when compared to September of 2012 decreasing by less than one percent (.7 percent). A total of 4,346,502 passengers traveled through DIA in September 2013, compared to 4,379,049 during the same month in 2012. The year-to-date total decreased by 1.6 percent from 40,162,163 passengers during the same period in 2012, to 39,529,845 passengers to date in 2013.
Nonstop international passenger traffic continued to show growth for the fourth consecutive month. September traffic was up more than 14 percent compared to September 2012. Much of the growth can be attributed to the increase in capacity for Icelandair and United’s new Denver to Tokyo daily nonstop flight.
“Passengers are recognizing that our Denver to Tokyo flight provides convenient one-stop service to all of Asia, not just Tokyo,” said Denver’s Manager of Aviation Kim Day. “Over the first three months of service, the top destinations accessed by the flight were Singapore, Bangkok, Seoul, Hong Kong and Taipei. Traffic between Denver and Tokyo has grown by nearly 40 percent in the short time since United’s nonstop flight launched demonstrating how travel is stimulated when new air service is implemented.”
Also in September, mail, freight and express cargo operations saw a 9.3-percent decrease. To date, 38,887,245 pounds of cargo have been handled at DIA in 2013, down from 42,884,109 pounds of cargo handled during the same time frame in 2012. There was a decrease in overall airport flight operations, from 50,232 in September 2012 to 48,923 in 2013, a 2.6 percent decline.
