Denver International Airport Offers Revolving Loan Fund to Help Kickstart Women and Minority Entrepreneurs

Home

DENVER – April 1, 2016 – Women and minority entrepreneurs entering the airport concessions business community for the first time can now apply online for gap financing provided by Denver International Airport (DEN).

The Airport Concession Loan Program is a $1 million revolving loan fund that provides financial assistance for first-time concessionaires. The program is administered by DEN’s Revenue Management division and will provide up to $250,000 per loan to provide gap financing during initial construction of a retail or dining location within the airport.

“Denver International Airport generated a record $336 million in gross concessions revenue in 2015, making DEN a very attractive place to do business,” said Bhavesh Patel, DEN’s chief revenue officer. “But getting your start in the highly competitive airport business environment requires a tremendous amount of time, energy and capital investment. This revolving loan program provides a mechanism for new airport concessionaires to tap into gap financing during buildout, and helps support our newest partners as their business venture takes off.”

To be eligible, business owners must be certified under the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Airport Concession Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (ACDBE) program, which provides opportunities for minority- and women-owned firms to participate in airport concessions. Certified firms must also be new to airport concessions, demonstrate a need for gap financing and meet other eligibility criteria.

More information about the program, including an online application, is available at http://business.flydenver.com/bizops/comHub-loans.asp

In 2015, DEN was selected by the FAA as the winner of the Disadvantaged Business Enterprise Advocate and Partner Award. The award, issued by the FAA’s Office of Civil Rights, recognizes the airport’s role in promoting opportunities for small businesses and certified minority-owned firms in concessions, construction and professional services at the airport. The FAA’s ACDBE program has been a particular success at DEN. Since 2006, the airport has helped grow the percentage of gross concessions revenue earned by certified firms from 27.14 percent ($52.4 million) in FY05-06, to 39.35 percent ($129.9 million) in FY13-14 – exceeding the airport’s annual goal of 33 percent and setting an all-time record for concessions revenue earned by disadvantaged businesses at DEN. In 2015, DEN had 168 contracts with certified ACDBE firms, generating a total of $129.8 million in gross revenue, representing 37.7 percent of the overall concessions revenue.
