DENVER, CO — September 3, 2013 — Denver International Airport (DIA) celebrated British Airways’ 15-year anniversary of service between Denver and London with a gate event for passengers today. Passengers enjoyed refreshments and a celebratory toast before the daily nonstop flight departed from Denver to London Heathrow Airport.

“British Airways has remained committed to the Denver market over the past 15 years and was one of the first international airlines to put DIA on the world map,” said Denver’s Manager of Aviation Kim Day. “According to our records, more than 2.4 million passengers have traveled on this flight between September 1998 and July 2013. Over this time, our studies estimate the British Airways’ service has supported 1,300 jobs annually, generated $694 million in wages and a total economic impact of more than $2.2 billion to the state’s economy. We are looking forward to many more successful years together in the future.”

On Sept. 1, 1998 service began between Denver and Gatwick Airport as first daily, year-round transatlantic flight since DIA opened in 1995. In 2002, services switched from Gatwick Airport to London Heathrow Airport.

“I am delighted that British Airways is celebrating 15 years of direct flights between London and DIA. This air bridge has played a vital role in stimulating links between Colorado and the UK,” said Beverley Simpson, the British Consul General in Denver. “British companies are coming to Denver to trade and invest, and British tourists are coming in the thousands and are now the third largest group of foreign visitors to the state. My congratulations to BA on their 15th anniversary, and I wish them many more years of success.”

British Airways operates the daily nonstop flight with the 275-seat Boeing 777 between Denver and London Heathrow Airport. The aircraft arrives in Denver at 6:45 p.m. and departs to London at 8:45 p.m.

Steve Clark, British Airways’ senior vice president customer service & operations, North America and Asia Pacific said, “We are really pleased to be celebrating the 15th anniversary of our Denver to London flights and we thank the Denver International Airport and the Denver community for the support they’ve given us. With our daily flight to London Heathrow’s Terminal 5, our customers can travel to London, Europe and beyond with an upgraded experience.”

In addition, Denver International Airport launched a Facebook contest today to win a British Airways collectible scale model of a Boeing 777. Three entries will be drawn randomly by the airport and each selected entry will receive one model airplane. Entries must be submitted by Sept. 20, 2013 at 11:59 p.m. Winners will be notified by Sept. 27, 2013.
