DENVER – June 5, 2023 – On Sunday, June 4, Denver International Airport (DEN) celebrated the 5th anniversary of the inauguration of summer seasonal nonstop flights by Edelweiss to Switzerland’s Zurich Airport (ZRH).
“We’re proud to celebrate this significant service anniversary with Edelweiss and thank them for their longterm investment in the Denver market,” said Denver Mayor Michael B. Hancock. “As the first and only airline to operate nonstop flights between Denver and Zurich, Edelweiss provides a direct connection from the Alps to the Rocky Mountains that continues to stimulate tourism demand and the creation of new jobs.”
Edelweiss operates Denver-Zurich flights on Airbus A340-300 aircraft. On May 8, 2023, service to Zurich resumed for the summer 2023 season after service was suspended in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Edelweiss currently operates two days per week, on Mondays and Fridays. A third weekly frequency – on Wednesdays – will be added between June 21 and August 23 to accommodate peak-season travel demand.
“Demand for transatlantic travel is expected to reach all-time highs this summer,” said DEN CEO Phil Washington. “With the increase in Denver-Zurich frequency to three weekly flights in peak months, Edelweiss’ service directly supports our Vision 100 strategic goal to expand DEN’s global connectivity.”
Since inaugurating DEN-ZRH flights five years ago, Edelweiss has operated nearly 200 flights carrying more than 40,000 passengers. In 2019, Zurich ranked among Denver’s 10 largest markets in Europe with more than 25,000 annual passengers traveling between the two cities. Demand for travel between Denver and Zurich peaks in the summer months, with nearly 60% of travel taking place between May and September.
“The connection has developed very well in the last five years and has grown into a popular Edelweiss destination,” said Edelweiss CEO Bernd Bauer. “Vacationers from Switzerland appreciate the almost unlimited possibilities for activities and the beauty of the region.”
Founded in 1995, Edelweiss is a Swiss leisure airline and a wholly owned subsidiary of Swiss International Airlines, a member of the Lufthansa Group. Edelweiss is certified as a 4-Star Leisure Airline by Skytrax for its product and service. Customers travelling from Denver can book seats through Edelweiss’ sister airline, Swiss International Air Lines at www.swiss.com.
