Most Wag-Worthy Solar Dog Houses Under the Sun

DENVER – Oct. 11, 2017 – For the last couple of weeks, passengers and visitors to Denver International Airport (DEN) had the opportunity to view and vote on their favorite sustainable dog house and now the results are in and it’s time to announce the winners. There are a total of seven awards, two selected by the public and the rest selected by a panel made up of representatives from DEN, Dumb Friends League, Panasonic and the U.S. Department of Energy. The “Dog’s Choice Award” was selected by the dogs from the airport’s Canine Airport Therapy Squad (CATS).

DEN recruited 15 local architecture and design firms to create sustainable solar-powered dog houses. The firms were required to include a water bowl and a solar panel that would operate such items as a light, music or fan. They were also encouraged to incorporate sustainable features such as rainwater collection, reclaimed materials, insulation and passive cooling. The solar panels included in the design were donated by Panasonic.

Below are the winners of the Sustainable BARKitecture Dog House Competition. Congratulations to all the teams for a job well done!

  • Best in Show – RS&H
  • Reserve Best in Show – CooverClark & Saunders
  • Most Sustainable – Davis Partnership Architects & The RMH Group
  • Most Innovative – CooverClark & Saunders
  • People’s Choice Award – RS&H
  • Kid’s Choice Award – Zaga Neighborhood Design
  • Dog’s Choice Award – OZ Architecture

In addition to the 15 dog houses included in the competition, DEN Airport Infrastructure Management employees donated their time and built a dog house. All 16 dog houses were available for purchase through an online auction, which received commitments of over $8,000 for the Dumb Friends League to help end pet homelessness. DEN’s Sustainable BARKitecture Dog House Competition was held in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon, which is being held on airport property at 61st and Peña Blvd. through October 15. The Solar Decathlon is a collegiate competition of 10 contests that challenge student teams to design and build full-size, energy-efficient, solar-powered houses. The winning team most successfully blends design excellence, smart energy strategies, innovation, and market potential. The Solar Decathlon allows visitors to tour the team houses free of charge and visit the Sustainability Expo to gather ideas to use in their own homes.
