DEN Reaches Milestone with Passenger Train Modernization Efforts, Continues to Make Upgrades to System to Improve Reliability

Home

DENVER – February 2, 2026 – DEN recently received the final Innovia APM R train car that was part of an initial order to modernize the airport’s Automated Guideway Transit System (AGTS) fleet. The order for 26 cars represents a $78.85 million investment in the system and replaces vehicles original to the airport’s 1995 construction. It also expands the fleet to accommodate additional passengers as the airport continues to grow.

Last year, DEN purchased 19 additional Innovia APM R cars, which are scheduled for delivery in 2027 and 2028. This second order will replace the remaining 15 legacy vehicles in DEN’s fleet and prepare the train for planned capacity and resiliency upgrades in the coming years.

“DEN’s train to the concourses serves over 150,000 riders each day. As we continue to grow our operations, we are working diligently to ensure the airport can accommodate current and future passenger volume while maintaining these critical assets,” said DEN CEO Phil Washington.

DEN put the first new Innovia APM R into service in 2024; 24 have been added into service to date. A total of 45 new train cars will replace all 31 original cars and expand the fleet, adding 14 additional cars by 2028. With the introduction of the new train cars, DEN increased system capacity by approximately 1700 people per hour and reduced the time between arriving trains. The new train cars are more energy efficient because of their lightweight aluminum car bodies, assembled using recyclable materials, and more efficient power supplies.

“These Innovia vehicles are an important part of Alstom’s commitment to the airport’s future, enabling DEN to enhance its transit capabilities and accommodate increasing passenger demand,” said Michael Keroulle, CEO of Alstom Americas. “While this delivery completes the base order of vehicles, Alstom is continuing its work to support DEN’s vision of creating a modern and efficient airport transportation network.”

In addition to replacing and upgrading its fleet, DEN is in the beginning stages of a comprehensive AGTS Revitalization Program. This new program will replace and upgrade aging infrastructure, including guideway switches, signaling software, and the train’s power distribution system. The revitalization program will also include expansion of the train’s maintenance facility to accommodate the expanded fleet and improve operational and maintenance efficiencies.
