DEN Celebrates Inaugural United Airlines Nonstop Flight to Rome

Home

DENVER – May 1, 2025 – Denver International Airport (DEN) today celebrated the inaugural of United Airlines’ new nonstop service to Rome, Italy (FCO). The aircraft departed Denver at 5:50 p.m. for a 10-hour, 30-minute flight to the Eternal City. A gate event celebration to commemorate the milestone featured DEN CEO Phil Washington, Denver Mayor Mike Johnston, Honorary Consul of Italy Giovanna Carrerio-Contreras, and Jonna McGrath, United’s Vice President of Denver Airport Operations.

“In Denver we embrace reaching new heights and I’m excited to celebrate a direct link between our vibrant city and one of the most iconic destinations in the world,” Denver Mayor Mike Johnston said. “United’s new nonstop route to Italy will both strengthen our global connections and open a wealth of opportunities for tourism, business and cultural exchange.”

The new route represents Denver’s first-ever nonstop connection to Italy. Flights are scheduled to operate daily through September 24 on a 257-seat Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. An economic impact analysis conducted by DEN shows the annual economic impact to Colorado’s economy of United’s Denver-Rome flights is estimated to be $23.2 million, including the creation of nearly 150 new jobs, predominantly in the tourism industry, generating $10 million in incremental wages.

“United’s continued commitment to delivering an exceptional travel experience in Denver is underscored by our new route to Rome as well as the nearly $1 billion in investments we have made to enhance the customer experience and bring greater convenience,” said Jonna McGrath, vice president of United’s Denver hub. “As Denver’s hometown airline, we’re proud to offer more destinations than any other carrier, giving Colorado residents and travelers passing through Denver unmatched flexibility and options to explore the destinations they want to visit most.”

Demand for travel between Denver and Italy has surged in recent years, recording an increase of 50 percent in 2024 as compared to pre-pandemic 2019. In terms of overseas markets, Italy now ranks second in terms of demand for travel from Denver, behind only the United Kingdom. This is up from a fourth-place ranking in 2019; Italy has surpassed France and Germany. The new nonstop flight to Rome is expected to further stimulate travel demand.

“This is an exciting day for DEN because United’s new route to Rome will tap a significant unserved market and provide our passengers with an important, convenient direct connection to Italy,” Phil Washington, DEN CEO said. “I thank United for their continued investment in DEN and look forward to supporting their continued growth at our airport.”

DEN is now connected nonstop with 35 international destinations across 19 countries, the most in DEN history. This includes nine destinations across eight countries in Europe.
