DENVER – April 30, 2025 – Denver International Airport (DEN) today celebrated the inaugural Airbus A380 flight operated by Lufthansa German Airlines. The aircraft arrived from Munich Airport (MUC) at 1:45 p.m. and departed back to Munich at 4:15 p.m. A gate event celebration to commemorate the milestone featured DEN CEO Phil Washington, German Honorary Consul for the State of Colorado and Wyoming Chadwick Williams, VP of Passenger Sales of the Americas, Lufthansa Group Dirk Janzen and President and CEO of Munich Airport Jost Lammers.
“Every flight is a new possibility and builds a bridge between Denver and the global community,” Denver Mayor Mike Johnston said. “As we launch this connection to Munich, we celebrate more than a new route — we’re building new relationships and making it easier than ever to share everything Denver has to offer with the world.”
The Airbus A380, which is the world’s largest passenger aircraft, has never operated at DEN for regularly scheduled commercial service until today. Flights are scheduled to operate daily through September 30. Lufthansa’s A380 is configured with 509 seats, which represents a capacity increase of nearly 75% over the 293-seat Airbus A350-900 originally scheduled to operate on the route
“Next year marks the tenth anniversary of Lufthansa flights from Denver to Munich, as well as a total of 25 years serving the market out of Frankfurt,” said Dirk Janzen, Vice President Passenger Airlines Sales, The Americas, Lufthansa Group. “With this in mind, the strategic placement of Lufthansa’s Airbus A380 aircraft on the Denver – Munich route certainly emphasizes the level of commitment that Lufthansa Group has toward Denver and the Rocky Mountain region.”
DEN and MUC share a long history, including a Sister Airport agreement that was signed in 1991. Lufthansa has operated nonstop service between Denver and Munich since May, 2016, and United added flights in April, 2022. In 2024, Munich ranked as Denver’s eighth-largest market in Europe in terms of demand, with nearly 40,000 passengers traveling between the two cities.
“Today DEN joins an exclusive group of global airports that are able to support regularly scheduled flights on the A380,” DEN CEO Phil Washington said. “This is a testament to DEN’s ongoing commitment to operational excellence and the growing demand for travel from Denver and the Rocky Mountain region, both important pillars of our Vision 100 strategic plan. I want to thank Lufthansa for their continued partnership and confidence in Denver.”
Denver International Airport is one of the busiest airports in the world. DEN is the primary economic engine for the state of Colorado, generating more than $47 billion for the region annually.
