Working across institutional and civic spaces, for over two decades Danielle Roney has developed an international practice dedicated to how art and technology can create meaning in the 21st century. Moving fluidly across sculpture and digital media, Roney’s work spans expansive architectural projection mapping, museum-scale installation and monumental sculpture commissions.
Rooted in intention and a sense of place, her artworks highlight how we individually and collectively navigate our place in the world.
She is continually inspired by the creative opportunities found in international transit corridors – from oceanic ports to international airports – exemplified by the dynamic DEN atrium sites that serve as gateways to this world-class city and its spectacular cultural and natural expanse. Through her site-specific approach and use of custom, cutting-edge material innovations, The CONSTELLATIONS – her largest sculpture commission to date – becomes an interior destination anchoring the airport’s personal universe.
The CONSTELLATIONS consists of two unique suspended sculptures based on the geometry of specific constellations visible above Denver during the Winter Solstice (Pegasus) and Summer Solstice (Boötes – The Herdsman).
Charting a majestic journey reflecting the airport’s personal universe, the iconic satellites highlight the enduring significance of cyclical seasonal transitions and reflect on the ancient human practice of celestial navigation.
Positioned in Concourse C’s vertical atriums—spaces that symbolically connect land and sky— The CONSTELLATIONS poetically situates the heart of the rocky mountain region within the larger universal expanse. Their curving, copper-toned forms mirror the constellations’ celestial positions, with embedded glass and LED-lit stars marking their light-years from Earth.
As a timeless compass, the stars above can remind us of how we individually and collectively navigate our place in the world. In this spirit, The CONSTELLATIONS inspires an expansive sense of place, offering a vision that is both specific and universal; celestial beacons linking histories and futures for all.
