DEN has one of the most efficient runway layouts in the United States, with six, non-intersecting runways
- Five runways measure 12,000 feet in length
- One runway (16R/34L) measures 16,000 feet – more than three miles long
- This is the longest commercial runway in North America
- Because of Denver’s high elevation and summer heat, this extra length often is needed for departures
- With 52.38 square miles (135.66 square kilometers) of land, DEN is one of the few major U.S. airports with room to expand its current facilities to accommodate future growth
- DEN has capacity for six additional runways, for a total of 12
The airfield is divided between the east and west sides
- The airfield contains a total of about 6 million square yards of concrete among 15,000 individual concrete panels
- The average panel size is about 20 square feet
- The airport has a comprehensive airfield pavement management system that tracks the lifespan for each of these panels, resulting in the ability to replace individual panels rather than entire areas of the airfield at once
