About Westwood Paletero Stories

Mexican paletas de hielo—colorful frozen treats made from fresh fruit or creamy milk—are much more than something sweet on a hot day. For many immigrant communities they carry memory, convey resilience and instill a sense of belonging. The paleteros, the people who walk the streets selling them, have become cultural icons in neighborhoods across the United States, including right here in Denver’s Westwood community.

Westwood Paletero Stories is a collaboration between artist Juls Mendoza, Re:Vision and History Colorado. At its heart, this project honors the lives and labor of Westwood’s paleteros while uplifting the creativity of local artists and youth. Seven paleteros shared their personal journeys—stories of migration, family and hard work—collected by southwest Denver youth trained in collecting oral histories through History Colorado’s Museum of Memory program. These stories inspired seven Denver-based artists who transformed paletero carts into vibrant, story-filled works of traveling art.

This project reflects Juls Mendoza’s vision of highlighting the everyday life, struggles and joys of the paletero—stories that echo not only in his own neighborhood of Westwood but Latinx communities across the United States. Through this collaboration a space was created where artists, youth and comunidad (community) could come together to celebrate and learn from these cultural icons.

Each cart is more than a canvas—it’s a story on wheels, carrying the memories, hopes and dreams of the people who push them through our streets. By transforming these carts into mobile works of art, the project shines a light on the dignity of work that often goes unseen while celebrating the creativity of the artists who brought them to life.

Westwood Paletero Stories also stands as a testament to intergenerational collaboration. Youth not only preserved community histories through storytelling but also gained skills in research, interviewing and creative expression, while artists translated those voices into forms that connect across cultures and generations.

In celebrating the paleteros, the cultural fabric of our neighborhoods and the enduring spirit of those who bring sweetness and joy to their communities is also celebrated—one paleta at a time.
