Mustang
by Luis Jimenez |
This 32-foot cast-fiberglass sculpture made its long-awaited
debut at Denver International Airport on the windy and cold morning of
February 11, 2008.
Luis Jimenez is considered one of the most important sculptors in America.
His characteristic style references the grandeur of the Mexican muralists,
the energy of the Southwest, and the bright colors he experienced in
his youth in his father’s sign-making company.
Jimenez’ vivid paint, unique treatment of surface, and method
of exaggeration have influenced many young artists who are emerging in
the galleries of Los Angeles and New York in the styles that are known
as Lo-brow and Urban Art. Jimenez received many honors for his art during
his life. His public sculpture Southwest Pieta was named a “National
Treasure” by the White House Millennium Council.
Mustang was to be Jimenez’ masterpiece. Tragically, the
artist died while working on the sculpture. |
| |
| Mustang was completed and installed
posthumously, serving as a tribute to Luis Jimenez’ life and body
of work. The bright blue, rearing horse with lighted red eyes welcomes
visitors and passengers to DIA as they approach or leave Jeppesen Terminal
on Peña Boulevard. The greeting is not gentle, but dynamic, strong,
and forceful. In this way, Mustang makes reference to the personality
of the American mesteño (or mustang), the history of the West,
and the majesty of this environment.
Mustang is visible only from Peña Boulevard. Please remember
to use care while driving past. There is no stopping on the roadway around
the sculpture. |

Denver International Airport and the Denver Office of Cultural Affairs
are pleased to announce the finalists for the Emerging Artists Project,
a public art program designed to support artists new to the field of large-scale,
public work. The goal is to foster new and dynamic talent on the international
stage of DIA.
A citizen panel, the Denver Public Art Committee, and the Denver Cultural
Arts Commission have selected four artists/teams for the project: Ethan
Jantzer, Natascha Seideneck, Christopher Lavery, and Live Architecture
Network. They are now working with DIA and DOCA staff to install
cutting-edge artwork on Peña Boulevard and in the B Gates concourse. Further
details of these public artworks will be posted on flydenver.com during
the installation.

Visitors are in for a rare Colorado experience when they pass through Denver International Airport. The Public Art Program features 26 site-specific works created by 39 artists and includes sculptures, murals and installations. The pieces are located in the landscape, the architecture of Jeppesen Terminal and Concourses, and in the train tunnels and communication systems.
Along with the permanent art collection, the airport has an exhibition program that includes several venues with changing exhibits. A theme is developed for each exhibit from an artistic point of view and interpretation. The program collaborates with museums, cultural institutions and arts organizations to present the highest quality two- and three-dimensional work.
During the holidays the Performing Arts series provides a pleasant diversion from what can be a stressful travel process. Musicians, children’s choirs and roving performers entertain passengers, visitors and employees by creating a festive and welcoming atmosphere.
