Denver International Airport (DEN) is looking for a Safety Management System (SMS) Intern to join the Airport Operations Safety Team in Summer 2024!

In this position, you will perform occupational safety and health work to minimize employee exposure to risk and injury, ensure compliance with occupational safety and health requirements, and enforce safety and loss policies and procedures within all of DEN's operations.

With the Airport Operations Safety Team you will experience:

  • Assisting in tracking and trending reported hazards using the DEN Safety Management System
  • Supporting the tracking and trending of vehicle and facility damage
  • Collaborating with airline representatives to address safety concerns
  • Participating in Safety Management System Committee meetings
  • Assisting in safety audits/risk assessments
  • Providing support for on-demand regulatory guidance to airlines and departments
  • Participating in hazard investigations and follow-ups
  • Assisting with Incident Analysis
  • Supporting the development and implementation of Safety Management System

We are looking for a proactive and dedicated intern with a keen interest in safety. The ideal candidate will possess the following preferred skills and characteristics:

  • A collaborative team player with the ability to work well in cross-functional groups
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Eagerness to learn and understand various software programs
  • Basic familiarity with Microsoft Office
  • Interest in Safety Management System (SMS)

About You

Our ideal candidate has some or all the following experience, skills, and characteristics:

  • Pursuing a degree in Airport Operations, Safety Engineering, Industrial or Environmental Health and Safety, Physical Science, or other related fields
  • Proactive and dedicated individual with a keen interest in safety
  • A collaborative team player with the ability to work well in cross-functional groups
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Eagerness to learn and understand various software programs
  • Basic familiarity with Microsoft Office
  • Interest in Safety Management Systems (SMS)

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education Requirement:  Current enrollment in an accredited college program leading to a certificate, licensure, associates, bachelor’s, or higher degree in, or a recent graduate (completed specified program within 1 year of completion). 
  • Experience: None 
  • Education and Experience Equivalency: No substitution of experience for education is permitted. 
  • License/Certification Requirement:  none

Location

The City and County of Denver supports a hybrid workplace model with a required min 3 days in office. Employees work where needed to support business, at the Denver International Airport. We do not offer housing or relocation assistance for this position.

Internship Duration and Hours:

This is a 1-year college internship with a completion date of May 2nd, 2025, with a maximum of 30 hours a week.

FBI Background Check

FBI criminal background check is required for all positions at Denver International Airport (DEN). Employees are also required to report any felony convictions and/or moving violations to maintain this clearance and be eligible for continued employment.
