Did you know that Denver International Airport (DEN) has over 400 volunteers who donated more than 39,000 hours in 2019!  There are two groups of volunteers that make up DEN’s Volunteer Program.  They include our Ambassadors and our Canine Airport Therapy Squad (CATS).

Ambassador Volunteer Program

The hospitality that travelers find at Denver International Airport has a lot to do with interactions with our Ambassador Volunteers.  From the moment travelers step off a plane or walk into Jeppesen Terminal, there’s a friendly and efficient team looking out for them.  Whether directing passengers to a connecting flight, helping to reunite long-lost friends or capturing a group photo, there is no task our 300 Ambassadors won’t take on.  We offer flexible volunteer schedules with shift availability weekday and weekends and times from 6 a.m.-10 p.m.

Requirements

Ambassador Volunteers should have strong communication skills, excellent customer service standards and be able to complete a 4-hour volunteer shift.  We have a quarterly hour commitment based on shifts that you work.  The hourly commitment is between 28 and 36 hours a quarter depending on what type of schedule you pick.  All airport volunteers must complete an interview, Airport Security background checks, fingerprinting and security testing prior to obtaining an airport ID badge.

Benefits

As a volunteer you will receive free airport parking, concession discounts, a custom uniform and educational opportunities.  You will gain an opportunity to connect with thousands of people from all over the world and help them navigate the airport.  You will be able to see your impact of your volunteer work daily through the smiles of our passengers.

Open House: If you want to learn more about this program come to our next open house!  Our open houses are held the first month of every quarter.  To sign up please contact the Volunteer Office at (303) 342-4207 or [email protected].

Collegiate Volunteer Program

Our Collegiate Ambassador Program is focused on introducing the upcoming generations to the aviation industry.  Our minimum age for volunteering is 18 years old.  You will be serving in the same capacity as our Ambassador Volunteers assisting customers in Jeppesen Terminal with the minimal commitment of 24 hours a quarter.  You will serve your volunteer hours in a fun, fast-paced environment while using your problem-solving skills and you will be able to meet people from all over the world. We provide our Collegiate Volunteers with the opportunity to build connections and network with various stakeholders at the airport.  Additionally, volunteers have the opportunity for on-going training such as airfield tours, art tours, baggage system tours and many other training opportunities.

Pet Therapy Program

The DEN Canine Airport Therapy Squad (CATS) program offers an opportunity for passengers to benefit in a truly unexpected way: by interacting with a certified therapy dog on the concourses.  Volunteers provide their time, and their family pet, in this program.  All 120-plus dogs are registered with the Alliance of Therapy Dogs and are trained, certified and insured.

Passengers are encouraged to visit with our “CATS” when flying through DEN.  Hug them, pet them and take pictures with them.  Our dogs (and one feline!) are here to improve the customers’ day in a way that only CATS can!  Our CATS team also supports community events and can be seen at the Denver Dumb Friends League Annual Furry Scurry, Denver Human Services Adoption Day and the Special Olympics of Colorado Plane Pull.

We host training opportunities year-round for this volunteer position.

All CATS volunteer teams are required to work 10 hours per quarter.  The dates of visits are flexible but our teams average three visits a month.

Training and Registration

CATS volunteer handlers wishing to apply with their pet must have experience working with a recognized animal therapy organization.  All dogs should have the equivalent of one year experience with an approved therapy program prior to volunteering at DEN.  Dogs with less than one year experience will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis prior to receiving approval to join the CATS therapy dog program.

Participating pets must be privately owned and be at least two-years old.  All canine CATS volunteers must be registered with the Alliance of Therapy Dogs, and international organization that registers, insures and supports members who are involved in similar volunteer activities.

Prospective CATS handlers will participate in DEN customer service training and field evaluations to ensure that this environment will be a good fit for both volunteer and dog. Additionally, handlers will go through Airport Security background checks, fingerprinting and security testing prior to receiving an Airport ID badge.

Benefits

As a volunteer you will receive free airport parking, concession discounts, a custom uniform and educational opportunities.
