Program Policy
In 1991, Mayor Wellington E. Webb created an ordinance that would ensure continued funding and implementation of art for public spaces. Denver International Airport has integrated 26 permanent works into its unique architecture. Artwork is divided into three categories: sculpture, murals and installations. Incorporating artwork into DIA was no simple task. Because of the particular considerations inherent in an airport, artwork needed to address public spaces in new and unconventional ways. Issues such as function, passenger convenience, ambient sound level, and maintenance, played a major role in determining how art could enhance the environment of a space that is first and foremost a transportation facility.
To ensure the greatest possible success, artists were selected early in the design process and were encouraged to integrate artworks into the actual structure and systems of the building. It is the fusion of art and architecture that makes Denver International Airport unique among the nation’s airports and the Public Art Program unique among the nation’s public art programs.
